Brilliantly designed and executed with a high degree of Italian styling, they were the first to couple innovative engineering with the application of new gun-making materials. The first Franchi shotguns offered aluminum receivers and chrome-lined barrels. Using the proven Browning long recoil design, the AL 48 began a tradition of materials innovation which continues today. It turned what was known to be a reliable, although somewhat ponderous action, into a lively and capable field gun. The dramatic improvement in handling mirrored the level of quality and craftsmanship which were then, and still remain, hallmarks of the Franchi brand.

Elegance in engineering as well as in appearance is a hallmark of the Alcione (Al-chee-oh-nay) series of over-and-under shotguns. Innovative features include the 12 and 20 gauge barrel sets, which mate to the same receiver and fore-end without custom fitting by a gunsmith. Another unique feature actually pre-loads the fore-end iron against the front of the receiver. This helps maintain proper headspace over a lifetime of shooting.

The Model 612 series have strong, lightweight receivers housing a multi-lugged rotary bolt which locks directly to the chrome-lined and steel-shot-proofed barrel.
